The Story of Vodafone Ireland

Vodafone Ireland is one of the country's leading telecommunication service providers, with a legacy in its technological DNA. In the early 1980s, the Irish Government established the country's national telecommunications provider, Telecom Eireann. It was then privatised in the 1990s and split into Eircom and Eircell. Eircell, the mobile phone division of Telecom Eireann, was acquired by Vodafone in 2001.  Since then, we have become one of the country's largest telecommunication operators with a strong presence in consumer and enterprise markets.

We are even one of the pioneers of several cutting-edge technologies in the country's market, with an investment of more than €900 million in building and maintaining its network. These include opening Ireland’s first 3G network in May 2003, and delivering mobile broadband speeds of up to 21Mbps through HSPA+ technology in February 2010. We secured the largest allocation of mobile spectrum available to the market in 2011. This facilitated the fastest possible 4G rollout and 5G expansion in selected areas across all 26 counties of Ireland.

While being at the forefront of the country's telecommunication spectrum, we are also involved in several important initiatives which include being the sponsors of the Irish Rugby team.

Overall, Vodafone Ireland has played an important role in the development of Ireland's telecommunications sector and is a major player in the country's digital economy.
